We’ve all been there. You’re tired after a long day, you jump in the shower, and halfway through, you realize you’re still wearing your favorite silver necklace. Panic sets in. Did you just ruin it?
The short answer is: It depends.
While pure water usually won’t damage high-quality 925 Sterling Silver, the chemicals in your shower products and the humidity in your bathroom can cause long-term issues.
Here is everything you need to know about wearing silver in the shower, and why “water” isn’t actually the biggest enemy.
The Short Answer: Is it Safe?
Technically, yes, you can wear sterling silver in the shower, but we do not recommend it.
Occasional exposure to water won’t instantly destroy your jewellery, but frequent showering will speed up tarnishing (blackening) and reduce the shine over time.
The Science: Water vs. Soap vs. Humidity
To understand why the shower is a risk, we need to break down the three elements your jewellery faces in the bathroom.
1. Water (The Minor Threat)
Pure water generally doesn’t damage sterling silver. However, most of us don’t shower in pure, filtered water.
-
Tap Water: Often contains chlorine, salts, or minerals (especially in “hard water” areas). These minerals can react with the copper found in Sterling Silver, leading to tarnishing.
2. Soaps and Shampoos (The Dullness Factor)
This is where the real problem starts. Body washes, shampoos, and conditioners often contain chemicals that are harsh on metals.
-
Residue: Even if the chemicals don’t cause a reaction, soaps leave behind a thin film of residue. Over time, this builds up in the crevices of your chains or rings, making the silver look dull, flat, and dirty.
3. Humidity and Steam (The Silent Killer)
Believe it or not, the water hitting your skin isn’t as bad as the air in the bathroom.
-
Oxidation: Silver tarnishes because of oxidation—a reaction with air. Humidity and heat speed up this process significantly. Leaving your silver on the bathroom counter while you shower is actually worse than wearing it, because the steam accelerates the blackening process.
What About Plated Silver?
If your jewellery is Gold Vermeil (gold plated over silver) or Rhodium Plated, you should never wear it in the shower.
-
The friction of washing, combined with hot water and soap, will strip the plating away much faster than normal wear. Once that plating is gone, the base metal is exposed and will tarnish quickly.
“Oops, I Showered With It!” – How to Fix It
If you accidentally wore your silver in the shower, don’t panic. Just follow these steps immediately:
-
Rinse it off: Ensure all soap residue is washed away.
-
Dry it thoroughly: Use a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not let it air dry, as water spots can form.
-
Buff it: Give it a quick shine with a polishing cloth.
The Verdict
Can you? Yes. Should you? No.
To keep your MyKia Jewels pieces looking brand new for years, make it a habit to take them off before you step into the water. Treat your jewellery like the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.
